BDPS300

Straight away you'll be impressed withy the design of the BDP-S300. It's not pretentious, has very controls and the way the front display dims is good. This is recessed behind the full-width, clear plastic, panel at the front which itself is beneath the centered loading draw.

The plain BDP-S300 front panel offers you just the basic controls: Power, Open/Close drawer, Play, Stop Pause, and chapter skip (front and back). All of the other functions you normally use such as the menu, resolution, dimming, etc, are only available from the remote control.

The remote control is a really nice thing too. It controls the BDP-S300 and a television. Maybe there's a few too many buttons and possibly they could be spaced further apart to prevent the occasional wrong press, and more importantly they are not back-lit. But it does get things done without any major problems. Another welcome touch is the removable sticker at the bottom of the BDPS300 remote provides both the telephone numbers and the website for Sony's technical support.

The BDP-S300 and remote control also both support Sony's "Theater Sync". This feature, which actually appears to be the same as one offered by all the other manufacturers under their own different names, provides for single touch operation with your compatible components when they are all connected via HDMI cable. For example, you can turn on the BDP-S300, your TV, and your AV receiver, set your receiver and your TV inputs to the correct settings for the disc playback, and then start the disc playing, all with the touch of the "Play" button on the remote control.

Around back of the BDP-S300 are all the things you would normally expect to see: component and HDMI (1.2) outputs, legacy composite and S-Video outputs, Toslink optical and coaxial SPDIF outputs, and both two-channel and multichannel analog audio outputs. The fan is quiet in its operation too. However, there is no Ethernet connection or any other provision for getting updates on-line or any web enabled interactive type features.

The BDPS300 jack for a detachable power cord isn't a standard IEC connector but one of the smaller, two prong ones that are difficult to find a replacement for if you were to lose it.

The BDP-S300 offers some interesting on-screen displays which show various information at any time.

BDPS300

"My 1st impression of the BDP-S300 was look at the price, but if you delve deeper there is so much more it has to offer. For years I have spent hundreds of pounds on dvds and after several months they'll suddenly stop working. I don't have the reciept and so end up having to purchase yet another dvd. Then a few months ago i saw this BDPS300 and daringly decided to just buy it, although the price tag may seem pretty high, when you see the product in person you will know you have made the right decision. The BDPS300 isn't that large in size so it's even easy to take on your travels if necessary. Also I have found it played even my the most scratched old dvds, easy to work functions, anybody could use it! This really is fantastic value and I'd definitely recommend it."
